A few gum trees studded our basically bare block back in the year 2001. We had lots of rock and little top soil so had to organise more than 50 truck loads of fill to be dumped and spread over the areas where we planned to establish the first gardens. We began by sinking a bore and then planted a rough circle of Leighton Greens to establish a windbreak, which is now the garden’s backdrop. We have strong memories of installing the irrigation system for these conifers in January, when the devastating 2003 bush fires struck Canberra. We had to scurry all over the property to stomp out smouldering branches and twigs as they fell to the ground.
