The GFC hit just at the time when I needed to dig the footings for the loggia and tower, so to avoid running down our super fund I did it all with a jack-hammer, a pick and a shovel. Three months of hard labour saw it completed. For most of the walls I used cement blocks, core filled with steel and concrete. For the fireplace of course I used heat tolerant bricks and for the chimney I used normal house bricks. The roof trusses were fabricated by a specialist supplier and Danice and I managed to erect them ourselves. The roof tiles come from Marsciano, in the Italian region of Umbria. The wood fired pizza oven is a Forno Bravo kit oven, made in California. Our wonderful next door neighbours donated and laid the carpet tiles.
